Participants in the Summer Marble School have the opportunity to undertake a technical and practical training program in Botticino marble carving, with a total duration of 66 hours, held in the sculpture workshop of Scuola Vantini.
Participants will attend from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, and on Saturday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Period: June / July
Location:
Scuola Vantini – Via Caduti Piazza Loggia 7/b, Rezzato (BS)
Instructors: Silvia Maffioli – Angelo Bordonari
The aim of the technical and practical program in Botticino marble carving is to provide both theoretical knowledge and a wide range of hands-on experiences, supporting the development of an individual artistic language related to stone and marble carving, in a continuous dialogue between tradition and contemporary practice.
Workshop hours are designed to develop skills and independence in conceiving and creating a marble work, also through themes and processes that actively involve students in making, enabling each participant to pursue an autonomous path toward the creation of their own artwork in Botticino marble.
Lessons are primarily focused on the technical and workshop-based aspects of stone and marble carving, while also including theoretical components related to the history of sculpture and the study of carving techniques from prehistory to the present day.
Students will have the opportunity, based on their own sketch or by copying one of the plaster or marble models available in the workshop, to create a work using Botticino marble, according to agreed dimensions. Each student may choose between the following options:
- Free-standing sculpture, starting from a Botticino marble block with maximum dimensions of 30 × 30 × 40 cm
- High or bas-relief, starting from a Botticino marble slab of standard workshop dimensions (30 × 40 × 5 cm, or 30 × 40 × 7 cm upon request)
Participants are required to choose one of the two options before the start of the Summer program and are invited to submit a graphic sketch in advance if they wish to develop a personal project. This allows the School to prepare materials and optimize production time during the Summer Marble School.
With the support of the instructor—who will guide them through the various technical processes and the proper use of equipment—students will work step by step, from rough shaping to the final finishing of their artwork. Participants will have access to professional workshop tools, including hand tools for marble carving, hammers, and pneumatic carving equipment.
